When I was 5 years old I found a large outdoor thermometer and I thought it was a stick of hard candy. It was about 18 inches long and a pretty red, so I thought it was filled with cherry juice. I broke it and tried to suck the juice out.
I remember it made my tongue sort of numb and I didn't feel good the rest of the day. I was lucky that the vacuum held the mercury in the glass tube or I would have been in real trouble. I don't know how much I actually got of the stuff, but I did taste something.
I guess we all got a dose of toxic stuff over our lifetimes with all that is hanging around. As kids we even ran through the DDT filled smoke when they were spraying for mosquito's.
